What is wrong with our leaders?
I just saw a clip of a recent speech of Dick Cheney's wherein he said that in November (this is paraphrased, except where quotes appear) we have to make the "right choice", because the "wrong choice" could get us "hit" again, but this hit would be a stronger, more debilitating hit. A hit that would "bring us back to a pre-9/11 mentality, if you will."
Say what, now?
So you're telling me that not only are these terrorists going to mount an attack so powerful that it will overwhelm our military juggernaut which spends more on the machines of war than all other first world countries combined, but you are also saying that this will put us back into a "pre-9/11 mentality"? AND you're saying that ALL this will happen if we elect John Kerry?
Well, let's think for a second about what that phrase "pre-9/11 mentality" means to ol' Dicky. According to Dick Cheney, and all the other Bush cronies we were completely unprepared for it, and a lot of people toss that blame back onto Clinton seeing as Bush was only in office a mere seven or eight months when the planes hit. That seems a rediculous claim, seeing as how nobody blamed Bush Sr when The World Trade Center got bombed in the first two months of Clinton's first term.* But, anyhow, that's where they stand on it. Okay, so what does that mean? By pre-9/11 he means unprepared. He means ignorant to the threats to our country. He means a false sense of security? Right?
How is he going to stand there and tell me that a devistating attack on this country could do that? Like we would see this horrible "hit" (whatever that may be) happen on our soil again, and we would... what? Shrug and go back to downloading porn and buying Hoobastank CD's?
Unless I am completely misunderstanding him... that's just plain stupid. Cheney has never struck me as stupid. A liar? Sure.
A man who puts the dollar above his fellow man? Uh-huh.
An unscrupulous s.o.b.? Oh yeah. But not stupid.
Can anyone help me out here? I've been looking and looking for a video clip or a transcript of it online, and I've got nothing. He said "8 weeks from now" is when we will all go to vote, so it was very recent. Did anybody see this? Did I just completely hear him wrong?
*The reality of pre-9/11 is Clinton and his administration handed off a comprehensive prepackaged anti-terrorism plan that was pushed for by George Tenet and Richard Clarke, and was embraced by Condi Rice and Colin Powell. Tenet and Clarke also had brought info of an upcoming plan of Osama's involving hijacking planes to use as missiles. They had been planning to have a meeting with Bush himself about all this for months before the attack, but guess what. Bush was on vacation for 42% of those first months, and never even heard about it, so it never got enacted. Later Rice and Powell would claim no foreknowledge of the attacks. In the end Tenet and, to a lesser extent, Clarke were both essentially scape-goated.
