My boss sucks.

He's a friendly enough guy... most of the time. But he comes in late, he leaves early, he takes long lunches, he asks me to do his job for him several times a week, etc.

Plus he's just plain bad at his job. Essentially, his job is to provide the other trainers and I with our client base. He gets paid a salary to do just that. The main methods of this are as follows:

A) Using the Gold's Gym log of new members, you make calls and tell them that for joining they get a free fitness consultation with a trainer. Ostensibly its to get them started off on the right foot with their new gym. Once you have them there for the consultation you take the opportunity to demonstrate for them why they need to hire a trainer.

B) You go out on the floor looking for people who either look particularly out of shape and could use the help or are executing an exercise poorly or both. Once you find this person, you take them through a free workout session... taking the opportunity to show them why they need to hire a trainer.

His job is pretty much sales, but it's nice because it's warm-lead sales. You know that these people are already interested in the product (the product being health and fitness specifically) you just have to demonstrate just how beneficial our programs can be and find out if they are willing to pay for it.

George has had me do both of these. The difference is, he gets paid for doing that stuff. I do not. If I am doing those things I am donating my time unless I get a signature, and even then he only gives me half the commission when I did all the work. He's taking advantage of me because he knows I need more clients badly, so he can squeeze more out of me than the other trainers.

So, last night I got called in to another gym to cover for a guy who was out sick. While I was there I got to chatting with their manager and he expressed interest in hiring me as his assistant manager. I told him that George had already been trying to get me to do it, but because I would have to work Saturdays I said no thanks. Saturdays are the only days that I get to see Meg for a whole day, and then Sundays are the only day I get to see both my girls. Two days per week of quality time is little enough as it is.

This other manager, Kyle, told me that the only reason George was trying to get me to work Saturdays is because he doesn't want to do it himself, and Kyle said if I worked for him I wouldn't have to if I didn't want to.

"I KNEW IT!" I blurted out. Kyle laughed and offered the job again. I said "yes please."

So, I am very likely starting to work at the Gilbert location very soon. Kyle wasn't exactly sure, but he thinks base pay for an assistant starts at somewhere between $600-$800 per month, plus commissions on any contracts I get signed. And I can still work part-time!

SWEET!
