"GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!"
I passed my second attempt at the ACE Test with FLYING COLORS!! I am now all official and whatnot. Knocked it out of the park with scores in the mid 80% in each of the five categories.
Also, the manager thing is out the window, but that is for the best. My present boss and I sat down and had a little chat. I told him about the job offer from the other guy and all the reasons why I wanted to take it. He answered me by giving me three new clients and telling me that any and all clients he signs will go to me over the next few weeks. There is only one other trainer on our staff and she is training hard for a body-building competition coming up, so she has no more room for any more clients in her schedule.
He also suggested that rather than becoming a manager I simply work as a trainer at both gyms. We ran some theoretical numbers and if I can just pick up about five more clients total then I will already be making as much as if I were a manager, and there would still be room for more clients. And the Gilbert manager already offered me nine more clients before he got around to the manager job. Just like in many service-oriented businesses, being on salary isn't all it's cracked up to be.
I was frank with him about my complaints about his performance and I think we reached an understanding. I told him I would decline the manager position and remain a trainer provided he continue building my client base and stop asking me to do his job for him.
Plus one of these new clients he gave me is a three-per-week client, which means I get paid three times as often for her than I do for most of my clients.
Woo Hoo.
